Things to check first

Potential cause
Try this:
No internet connectionAttempt to get online using a computer connected to your modem with an Ethernet cable to rule out any non-wireless connection issues.
Incorrect/Forgotten WiFi passwordEnsure you have the correct password for your WiFi network. If you have an iiNet modem you can check its setup guide to learn how to access your WiFi settings. If you purchased your modem/router elsewhere, please visit the manuafacturer’s website for support information.
WiFi ability disabled/turned off on computer or deviceTurn WiFi ability back on. Some laptops have a switch or button to turn WiFi ability on or off. Smartphones and tablets will have this switch located in the “WiFi” or “Connections” section of their settings.
WiFi broadcasting disabled in routerJust like some laptops, some modems have a button to quickly turn WiFi broadcasting on/off and this may have been pressed by accident.
Out of WiFi rangeMake sure you’re within range of your modem’s WiFi signal. This is usually around 30 metres, but the distance can be reduced by obstacles (e.g. walls) between you and your modem.

Third-party modems

If you have a modem or router that wasn’t purchased from Australia Broadband, you’ll need to log into its default gateway to change the WiFi settings. The layout of modem settings can vary greatly for each device, so please consult your modem’s user manual or check the manufacturer’s website for support information about changing the WiFi settings.

VDSL Home Gateway (Huawei HG658)

Although screenshots have been taken using the HG532d, these instructions should also work for the VDSL Home Gateway (Huawei HG658) as the layout of their settings are very similar.

  1. On a computer/device that’s connected to your modem via Ethernet (recommended) or WiFi, open your web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1
  2. Log in with the default username “admin” and default password “admin”. If you have changed your login details from the default, use your custom details instead.
  3. In the left-hand column, click Basic and then select WLAN. Make sure Enable is ticked for Wireless. 
  4. If the computer/WiFi device you’re using to connect to the WiFi network was made before 2009, set the Mode to 802.11b/g. This should also force the 11N Band Width option on the screen to change to a Rate option – leave this set to Auto.
  5. Make sure Enable for SSID is ticked, but do not tick Hide broadcast. If the SSID broadcast is hidden, then your WiFi network name won’t show up in the list of available networks when you try to connect. 
  6. Click the Submit to finish. Wait a few minutes and then try to connect your devices to the WiFi again.
  7. If you still couldn’t connect, try to connect using a different device (e.g. smartphone or laptop) if you have one available. If you can connect with other devices, then the original computer or device may have a faulty wireless adapter. If you suspect this is the case, you may need to make a claim for a replacement under warranty or if the warranty has expired, investigate the possibility of getting it repaired.
  8. If you’re using a Windows computer, performing a winsock reset may resolve an issue with a wireless adapter.
  9. If you still can’t connect to your modem’s wireless network, please call our Support Team on 1300 023 354 for a hand.

Cable Gateway Pro

  1. On a computer/device that’s connected to your modem via Ethernet (recommended) or WiFi, open your web browser and go to http://192.168.0.1

  2. Log in with the default username “admin” and default password “password”. If this fails, try leaving both fields blank. If you have changed your login details from the default, use your custom details instead.
  3. On the dashboard, click the blue Wireless panel.
  4. On the Wireless Configuration page, you’ll see settings for both the 2.4GHz network and 5GHz network. Make sure Wireless Network is set to ON for the network you use. 
    Note

    If you’re using the 5GHz but you’ve never been able to connect successfully, switch to the 2.4GHz network but not the 5GHz one as your WiFi device may not be compatible with 5GHz.

  5. If the Wireless Network was already set to ON, click Advanced in the top right-hand corner. 
  6. Select Wireless to view Radio Settings for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. You’ll need to change the Radio settings for the network you use as follows
    1. 2.4GHz network
      • If the computer/WiFi device you’re using to connect to the WiFi network was made before 2009, set the Network Mode to Legacy b/g. This should also remove the option to change Channel Width as only 20MHz is available. This setting may make it easier for older WiFi devices to connect.
    2. 5GHz network
      • Set the Network Mode to Require n/ac and Channel Width to 20MHz. This setting may make it easier for older 5GHz-compatible WiFi devices to connect.
  7. Wait a few minutes and then try to connect your devices to the WiFi again.
  8. If you still couldn’t connect, try to connect using a different device (e.g. smartphone or laptop) if you have one available. If you can connect with other devices, then the original computer or device may have a faulty wireless adapter. If you suspect this is the case, you may need to make a claim for a replacement under warranty or if the warranty has expired, investigate the possibility of getting it repaired.
  9. If you’re using a Windows computer, performing a winsock reset may resolve an issue with a wireless adapter.
  10. If you still can’t connect to your modem’s wireless network, please call our Support Team on 1300 626 325 for a hand.

NetComm NB16WV-02

  1. On a computer/device that’s connected to your modem via Ethernet (recommended) or WiFi, open your web browser and go to http://10.1.1.1 

    Note: If you are unable to view this page, please see No communication between Modem and Computer.

  2. Log in with the default username “admin” and default password “admin”. If you have changed your details from the default, use your custom details instead.
  3. In Basic View, click the Wireless 2.4GHz tab.
  4. Make sure Wireless (WiFi) is set to On and that SSID Broadcast is set to Enable. If SSID broadcast is disabled, then your WiFi network name won’t show up in the list of available networks when you try to connect. Click Save and apply the changes
  5. Repeat step 4 on the Wireless 5GHz tab if you use this network. If you don’t connect to this network (older WiFi devices may not support 5GHz) then it’s fine to leave it turned off.
  6. Click Switch to advanced view at the bottom of the page.
  7. Click Network Setup from the top bar and then select Wireless 2.4GHz from the drop-down menu.
  8. If the computer/WiFi device you’re using to connect to the WiFi network was made before 2009, set the Wireless Mode to G only. If the computer/device was made in 2003 or earlier, try B only. Older WiFi devices can’t connect to the newer N Mode. 

    Note: If your WiFi device supports 5GHz WiFi, try switching Wireless Mode to N Only in Network Setup > Wireless 5GHz.

  9. After making your changes, click Save. Wait a few minutes and then try to connect your devices to the WiFi again.
  10. If you still couldn’t connect, try to connect using a different device (e.g. smartphone or laptop) if you have one available. If you can connect with other devices, then the original computer or device may have a faulty wireless adapter. If you suspect this is the case, you may need to make a claim for a replacement under warranty or if the warranty has expired, investigate the possibility of getting it repaired.
  11. If you’re using a Windows computer, performing a winsock reset may resolve an issue with a wireless adapter.
